Lite-Brite, Lite-Brite, Turn on the magical shining light!

This link is for anyone who ever enjoyed playing with litebrite as a kid. It doesn't feel quite as satisfying as punching those little lights through the black paper, but it is a lot easier to fix mistakes!

Oscar Predictions

To get myself in the mood for the up-coming Oscars, including an Oscar party I'll be attending where I'm sure there'll be predictions contest, I'm going to make some Academy Award selections and predictions. Obviously, I know nothing about golf

One of Aviva's friends helped us discover the answer to one of our sierratradingpost trivia questions. Let's just say that our lack of knowledge about golf made it impossible to come up with the answer on our own.

Random Trivia Questions

So I sometimes buy things from this website, Sierra Trading Post, even though it's owned by a super-religious guy who I think belongs to the Mormon Church of Later-day Saints and every catalogue includes a quote from the bible, a series of "we believe" statements and other forms of prostelytizing. What can I say? I'm a cheapskate and it sometimes causes me to compromise my ethics, like when I shop at Wal-mart because they have these great thinsulate glomitts with flip-tops so I can still tie my shoes, grasp the dog's leash, or hold a latte while treking from the car to my office--all while keeping my hands toasty-warm. Anyway, Sierra sells sporting goods at really low prices and I can often buy my favorite running shoes for about 50% off the retail price. Sometimes I've found my favorite Mizuno or Saucony running shoes for as little as $20. They also sell incredibly dowdy clothing, hideous artwork, and a huge range of camouflage hunting gear, including "hide-a-pooch" hunting blinds for dogs. In any case, they include a random trivia question in each catalogue and if you answer the question correctly, your order ships for free. In the past, I've managed to answer the questions after only a few minutes of Google searching. However, their questions seem to be getting more difficult. The last two have Aviva and I completely stumped. If anyone out there knows the answer to either of these questions, Fargo will be very grateful as I'd like to buy him a new leash--a flexible one they call a "roamer," which I can attach around my waist when we go on runs together. Only $12.95. Woohoo!

So here are the questions:
  • What is the name of the "cabinet member who presents the best face of the body and usually gets the door?" A riddle about cabinet terminology, as Aviva suspects because a "cabinet member" is a term used to designate any part of a cabinet, such as a hinge, door, etc. Or some sort of political science factoid that I obviously never learned in school? Who knows.
  • An albatross at Strawberry Hill is equal to what at Manassas Hills? Does this one has something to do with civil war battles? Walpole's villa in London? A golf course in Manassas Virginia? A famous harness-racer named Albatross Arkle? Obviously, we're not sufficiently versed in the history of either location to come up with an answer.

Frank and Gordon

My mother told me about these Bell Canada ads that started airing with the start of Olympic coverage a few weeks ago. An ode to Canada's national animal--the beaver. So if you'd like to learn more about Frank and Gordon, or even find everything you need to play a game of "pin the tale on the beaver" at your next party, you can find it all at their website. Kinda cute, eh? Maybe it's only amusing to Canadians. Or maybe just this Canadian.

Wind's Gonna Blow You Away

The wind didn't blow us away; however, it did blow away both of our recycling bins, scattering our paper and plastic throughout the neighborhood. In fact, the streets around our house are full of trash and the crows are having a grand old time picking through the stray bits of garbage. Aviva and Fargo went hunting for the lost blue boxes this morning but to no avail. Apparently, temperatures dropped from 64F to 27 F in only a few hours, the winds peaked at 77mph , a motorist was killed by a falling tree, schools were closed for the day, and more than 60,000 people lost power. You can read about the windstorm and see some impressive photos in the Democrat and Chronicle website, Rochester's sometimes-dubious local newspaper.

Reggie's Pearly Whites

Reggie went in to the veterinarian's office yesterday to have his teeth cleaned. He's almost 12 years old and this was his first experience with dental work. I was a little worried because they always warn you that anesthesia can be dangerous for animals as they get older. There weren't any complications with the anesthesia, but they did extract one molar, along with some of the bone structure from around the tooth. He now has several stitches, one missing tooth, and a shaved leg from where the I.V. was inserted. He seems to be recovering, though he has this glassy-eyed, slightly stoned look about him that's likely caused by the pain medication. Total Cost: $435.00. Yup. That's right. Crazy, I know but I couldn't just let him suffer now could I? The sad thing is I don't think I've ever spent that much on my own teeth.
